Cavities & Tooth Decay
Other than the common cold, tooth decay is one of the most common infections that can affect a person. Tooth decay leads to cavities and is a common cause of tooth loss in younger people. Unlike other diseases, cavities are not life threatening and are easily preventable. Here at Grant Ringler, DDS we provide patients with the knowledge and techniques to avoid tooth decay, and we provide high-quality treatment when cavities are present.
What causes a cavity?
There is natural bacteria that live in your mouth and form plaque on a consistent basis. Bacteria are useful for converting all food, especially sugar and starch, into acids. But without frequent brushing and flossing, these acids cause damage to tooth enamel over time in the form of a harmful, colorless sticky substance called plaque.
If cavities are not treated early on, they can lead to more serious problems that require extensive dental work such as root canal therapy.
How can I prevent cavities?
Your body’s own saliva is an excellent cavity fighter because it contains special chemicals that clear away harmful materials, but saliva alone is not sufficient to combat tooth decay. Practicing good oral hygiene by brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing and rinsing is the best way to defend against cavities. Our office uses fluoride, a natural substance that helps to re-mineralize the tooth structure and rebuilds the early damage caused to your teeth by plaque bacteria. Fluoride is also added to toothpaste, community water supplies, and bottled beverages to fight cavities and clean teeth.
One of the best ways to protect your teeth from cavities is to cut down on sweets and snacks between meals. You should also try to brush after every meal and floss daily. In order to detect cavities in their early stage, you should visit a dentist at least every six months for checkups and professional cleanings.
If you are experiencing unusual sensitivity to hot and cold water or foods or if your teeth have changed color, you may have a cavity. Cavities can also cause localized pain in your tooth or near the gum line. Dr. Ringler’s talented team of hygienists and dental assistants can help you find pain relief by treating your cavities and restoring your dental health. The longer you wait to treat infected or painful teeth, the more lengthy and intensive the treatment will be. Call our Hutchinson dentist office today to schedule an appointment!
